Sydney Thunder have snapped up the domestic season’s breakout quick. Victorian left-armer Harry Hoekstra, 20, has landed a BBL|16 deal, according to CODE Sports.
It is a dream rise. Hoekstra started this season on a one-year rookie deal with Victoria. In his first four One-Day Cup and Sheffield Shield games he took three five-wicket hauls: 5-42, 6-103 and 5-46. He nearly made it four in a row, taking 4-52 in the second innings against Tasmania.
The best part of the story is who he will bowl next to. Hoekstra grew up watching Trent Boult, and models his own left-arm swing game on the New Zealand great. Boult signed for Thunder earlier this month. Now the two share a dressing room.
What it means for the Renegades
Melbourne Renegades are still hunting for cover after Jason Behrendorff was ruled out for the season with shoulder surgery. With Hoekstra now off the market, their search goes on.
The same CODE Sports report has another move worth noting. Nathan McAndrew joins Adelaide Strikers on a one-year deal after nine seasons and 75 games at Thunder.
Thunder, coached by Andrew Flintoff, are building a pace attack with real bite. Boult, Lockie Ferguson and now Hoekstra give them three very different kinds of threat with the new ball.
