Sydney Thunder have landed a big one. New Zealand quick Trent Boult has signed for BBL|16 on a one-year deal.
Boult is available for the full season, finals included. That matters. Plenty of overseas stars fly in for half a season and leave before the games that count. Boult is staying for the whole ride.
The Kiwi new-ball pair
Boult joins fellow New Zealander Lockie Ferguson at Thunder. One bowls left-arm, the other right-arm. One swings the new ball, the other rushes batters with pace. New coach Andrew Flintoff called it a serious threat to batters across the league, and he has a point. Thunder could not take early wickets last season, and that is exactly what this pair is built to fix.
Boult is 37 now, but his job has not changed: attack with the new ball, take early wickets, set the tone. He played eight games for Melbourne Stars back in 2022-23, so the BBL is not new to him. Thunder finished last in BBL|15. This signing says they do not plan to stay there.
Thunder fans online welcomed the news fast. Most of the talk was about the Boult-Ferguson pairing. The other question fans raised was batting depth. That is now the next hole for Thunder to fill.
Who is Trent Boult?

Why did Thunder sign him?
