Mustafizur Rahman Set for Renegades BBL Debut

Bangladesh left-arm quick Mustafizur Rahman is set to play his first Big Bash season. Reports from Dhaka say he will turn out for Melbourne Renegades in BBL|16.

The news broke at the D3 Trophy auction on Monday, 26 October. Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal confirmed to reporters there that Mustafizur and Rishad Hossain had both asked the board for no-objection certificates. Mustafizur applied on 25 October, and the board sounds positive about granting it. The Renegades have not posted their own announcement yet, so the final paperwork is the last step to watch.

It is a big deal for Bangladeshi fans. Only two of their players have played in the BBL before: Shakib Al Hasan and Rishad Hossain. Rishad returns to Hobart Hurricanes this season for a second straight year.

Why the Renegades need him

The Renegades attack has lost plenty of experience. Jason Behrendorff is out for the season after shoulder surgery, and Adam Zampa has left for the Hurricanes. Mustafizur’s cutters and slower balls that grip and dart off the pitch give the side a different kind of threat at the death.

He has played in almost every major T20 league going, from the IPL to the PSL, the ILT20, the LPL and the Vitality Blast. The BBL was the one missing from the list.

One knock-on effect: he will miss the T20 leg of the D3 Trophy, which runs from 12 December to 25 January. Seven Rings Cement bought him at the auction for 70 lakh points, but only for the one-day part of the tournament.
