The Chennai opener might not be a one-off. That is the message from Cricket Australia after Chennai opener tickets sold out fast.
Alistair Dobson, the head of Big Bash Leagues, says the days of the BBL being just an Australian league are over. If the 12 December game at Chepauk works, Chennai could host the season opener again. The match opens the full BBL 2027 schedule.
The big test: weather
There is one catch. There is no reserve day for the opener. Mid-December sits near the end of Chennai’s monsoon season, so the league is keeping a close watch on the forecast. Cricket Australia may allow extra playing time on the night to push for a full game if rain hits.
The crowd target
Cricket Australia wants a sellout at Chepauk, a ground that holds around 35,000 people. The opener is already the highest-selling game of the season. Our BBL 2027 tickets guide has the booking details. A full house and a finished game would prove the BBL can travel. A washout with no reserve day would give the critics plenty to say.
When is the BBL Chennai opener?
Saturday 12 December 2026, Renegades vs Scorchers, 2:40 PM IST / 8:10 PM AEDT.
Is there a reserve day for the Chennai BBL match?
No. The league will watch the monsoon forecast and may allow extra time on the night.
Could the BBL play more games outside Australia?
Nothing is promised, but Dobson says the league wants fans all over the world watching and the best players joining in.
