Thunder Chase 179 to Beat Heat in WBBL|12 Thriller

Brisbane Heat posted the highest WBBL score ever seen at Drummoyne Oval. It still wasn’t enough. Sydney Thunder stormed to a six-wicket win with 20 balls to spare, completing their biggest run chase in club history.

The Heat looked set. Grace Harris smashed 58 off 37 and Georgia Redmayne made 57, their 99-run stand carrying the Heat to 5-178. The Thunder’s reply had no fear in it. Phoebe Litchfield launched 41 off 19 to blow the start open, Anika Learoyd steadied things with 37 off 28, and Heather Knight did what veterans do — 54 not out off 29 balls, pacing it perfectly (cricket.com.au match report).

My favourite moment? Laura Harris hit the winning runs, caught by her own sister Grace at the boundary with three needed. Sibling rivalry, mid-match. You don’t get that in scripted cricket.

The table tells a sharp story now. Thunder are two from two and chasing the Sixers at the top. The Heat? Two losses, and a drought stretching 702 days — 12 straight defeats since the 2024 decider. Their bowling leaked too many loose balls under pressure again. We previewed this one in our Thunder vs Heat match preview.

Who was Player of the Match?

Heather Knight, for her unbeaten 54 and the calm way she closed out a big chase.

What is the Heat’s losing streak now?

12 games in a row, going back to the WBBL 2024 final. No win in 702 days.

How did the Thunder win so easily?

Smart pacing. Litchfield went early, Knight closed late, and 180-4 in 16.4 overs never felt out of control. The live score updates right through on bbl.today’s live score page.
