Sydney Sixers made it two wins from two in WBBL|12 on Sunday, crushing the Hobart Hurricanes by 87 runs at Drummoyne Oval — and it was all about one woman.
The game looked lost after two overs. At 6 for 3, with Sophia Dunkley, Ellyse Perry and Amelia Kerr all back in the shed, the Sixers innings was on life support. Then captain Ashleigh Gardner decided she had seen enough.
Gardner smashed 124 off just 60 balls — 10 fours, 9 sixes — and with Alice Capsey (54 not out off 40) put on 176 for the fourth wicket in 91 balls. From 6 for 3, the Sixers roared to 196 for 8. Nicola Carey (3-31) and Chinelle Henry (2-8) were the only Hurricanes bowlers to come out with any credit.
Chasing 197 was never on. The Hurricanes crashed to 26 for 5, Caoimhe Bray (2-14) ripping out the top order before Gardner (3-23) and Amelia Kerr (3-25) closed the show. Maddy Green (42 not out) and Chinelle Henry (32) added 52 for the sixth wicket to save some face, but the Hurricanes were bundled out for 109 in 17.4 overs.
Gardner took Player of the Match for the 124 plus three wickets — a genuine all-round masterclass from the Sixers skipper. The Hurricanes have now lost two from two, while the Sixers’ perfect start continues.
