Will Salzmann Signs for Sydney Thunder for BBL|16

Sydney Thunder keep building. They’ve signed 22-year-old allrounder Will Salzmann on a one-year deal for BBL|16.

Salzmann is a Camden boy, born and raised in Western Sydney. He was on Thunder’s list back in BBL|13 but never played a game. Three years on, he’s back — and still waiting for his first BBL appearance. The club made it official in their announcement.

Why Thunder wanted him

His start to the domestic season did the talking. Last month he smashed 70 off 65 balls for NSW in the One-Day Cup opener, steering a chase of 359 against Queensland and winning player of the match.

He bowls right-arm pace too, and he’s keen to learn from new head coach Andrew Flintoff. Flintoff was one of the best allrounders of his generation, so the fit is obvious.

Where does he fit?

Here’s the honest question. Thunder’s attack is stacked: Trent Boult joined the Thunder and Lockie Ferguson is back, plus Daniel Sams, Chris Green and Tanveer Sangha. Breaking into that group won’t be easy.

But Thunder finished last in BBL|15 and their middle order lacked punch. Salzmann’s best shot is as a finisher who can bowl a few overs — the role that wins tight games. The talent is there. The debut is overdue.

To celebrate the signing, Salzmann ran a clinic at Cricket Central with kids from his junior club, the Tahmoor Turtles. The Turtles take an annual bus trip to Thunder games. Now one of their own plays for the club.

Has Will Salzmann played in the BBL before?

No. He was listed in Sydney Thunder’s squad in BBL|13 but never played a match, so BBL|16 would be his first Big Bash season.

Why did the Thunder sign him now?

His strong start to the domestic season earned it: 70 off 65 for NSW against Queensland in the One-Day Cup, winning player of the match in a 359 chase.
