Sydney Sixers have fixed their spin problem. Western Australia off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli has signed a one-year deal for BBL|16.
The move plugs the gap left by Todd Murphy, who moved to Melbourne Stars after five seasons in magenta. The Sixers also lost Ben Manenti to the Renegades. That left them short of spin options, and Rocchiccioli is the answer.
Why he’s worth the wait
Rocchiccioli hasn’t played a Big Bash game in three years. That might sound like a worry. But his red-ball record says otherwise.
No spinner has taken more Sheffield Shield wickets (154) since 2021-22. He picked up 6-83 for a CA XI against Bangladesh in August, then took four wickets against India A last month. He’s on Australia A’s tour of India right now, in career-best form.
Here’s the interesting part: he’ll be the fourth BBL club Rocchiccioli has joined, yet he’s played only five BBL games. A bowler that good, still hungry for a real T20 run. Sixers fans should be excited about that.
What it means for the Sixers
General manager Rachael Haynes pointed to his extra bounce as a point of difference in the middle overs. He joins Joel Davies as the club’s spin-bowling options. The Sixers now have 16 of their 18-man squad locked in.
Who is Corey Rocchiccioli?
A 29-year-old off-spinner from Western Australia. He bowled for Renegades and Stars in BBL|12 and BBL|13, then sat out as a Scorchers replacement player last summer. His first-class numbers are among the best in the country.
Why did the Sixers sign him?
They lost Todd Murphy to the Melbourne Stars and Ben Manenti to the Renegades. That left Joel Davies as their only regular spin option. Rocchiccioli fills that hole with proven wicket-taking form.
When does the Sixers’ BBL|16 season start?
December 15, at the Gabba against Brisbane Heat — the first game of the Australian leg of the season.
