Background: Country, Early Life and Domestic Roots
Curran was born in Cape Town but grew up in a serious cricket family. His father Kevin played international cricket for Zimbabwe, his grandfather was also a cricketer, and his brothers Sam and Ben both became professionals — Sam is a well-known England all-rounder and 2019 World Cup winner. The Currans are one of cricket’s great families.
Tom moved to England as a teenager, joined Surrey, and completed his residential qualification in 2015. He broke into the Surrey first team and spent over a decade as a county stalwart — the kind of player who does the hard jobs: bowling at the death, batting in a crisis, taking the big catches. He’s also played first-class cricket for Surrey with real success: 199 wickets at 29.66, including a 10-wicket match.
International Career
Curran played for England in all three formats between 2017 and 2021, and was part of the squad that won the 2019 World Cup on home soil.
Test Career
Two Tests, both on the 2017-18 Ashes tour of Australia. He debuted at Melbourne on Boxing Day 2017 (cap 682) and played the Sydney Test too, scoring 66 runs at 33.00 with a best of 39 and taking 2 wickets. It was a tough introduction — an in-form Australian batting line-up in their own backyard — and he never played Test cricket again.
ODI Career
His best format for England. In 28 ODIs he scored 303 runs at 37.87 with a best of 47 not out, and took 34 wickets at 37.94 with a best of 5 for 35 — his maiden five-wicket haul, which came against Australia and won him Player of the Match. He debuted against the West Indies in September 2017 and played his last ODI against Sri Lanka in July 2021. He was in England’s 2019 World Cup squad, though he didn’t play as England lifted the trophy.
T20I Career
In 30 T20Is he took 29 wickets at 31.27 with a best of 4 for 36, and scored 64 runs. He debuted against South Africa in June 2017 and played his last T20I against Pakistan in July 2021. He was named as a travelling reserve for the 2021 T20 World Cup, then added to the main squad when his brother Sam was ruled out with a back injury.
Domestic and Franchise Career
For Surrey, Curran has been a rock for over a decade — 65 first-class matches, 199 wickets, and a reputation as the man for the big moment (he once took a T20 Blast hat-trick). Around the world, he’s one of the most travelled T20 professionals in the game: Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals in the IPL; Oval Invincibles in The Hundred; Islamabad United, Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators in the PSL; Gulf Giants; and most recently Edinburgh in the Euro T20 League, where he took 10 wickets in four games.
In all T20 cricket he’s played 290 matches, scoring 2,705 runs at a strike rate of 145.89 with a best of 67 not out, and taking 297 wickets at an economy of 8.83. He’s closing in on 300 T20 appearances — a landmark few players reach.
BBL Career: Sixers to Stars to Heat
Sydney Sixers (2018/19–2023/24): Curran’s first BBL home. He learned Australian conditions over several seasons with the Sixers, becoming a reliable overseas seamer.
Melbourne Stars (2024/25–2025/26): His best BBL cricket. Last season he took 16 wickets in 10 appearances, including a career-best 4 for 10. Across 52 BBL matches in total, he’s taken 72 wickets at an average of 20.61 — outstanding numbers for an overseas quick.
Brisbane Heat (2026-27): In September 2026, the Heat signed him as their first overseas recruit for BBL|16 on a one-year deal, after the contracting embargo lifted. Coach James Hopes had worked with Curran at Delhi Capitals in the IPL and wanted his experience and character. Hopes compared his lower-order batting to Michael Neser: someone who can manage an innings or counter-attack as needed. Read our full story: Tom Curran signs for Brisbane Heat.
Playing Style and Strengths
Curran is a proper all-rounder. He bowls clever variations at the death: slower balls, yorkers, wide lines, and the odd surprise bouncer. He’s hard to get away — a BBL average of 20.61 across 52 games backs that up. With the bat, he’s a powerful lower-order hitter who can clear the ropes or nurdle singles, depending on what the situation needs.
He’s also an excellent fielder. But his biggest strength is temperament and experience. He wants the ball when the game is on the line, and after nearly 300 T20 games — plus a World Cup winners’ medal — there isn’t a situation he hasn’t seen. That calm is exactly what the Heat are paying for.
Recent Form and What to Watch
Curran arrives at the Gabba in good form. Sixteen wickets in ten games for the Stars last season, then ten wickets in four Euro T20 League games for Edinburgh — form that caught Hopes’ eye just before the signing. The Heat will use him as their death-bowling specialist and late-order finisher: the Michael Neser role, as Hopes sees it.
Watch for his battle with the league’s best finishers in the death overs, whether the Gabba’s bounce adds extra bite to his cutters and slower balls, and how quickly he forms a partnership with the Heat’s other new overseas recruit, Tim Robinson. Two experienced heads joining at once could transform Brisbane’s campaign. Check the BBL 2027 schedule for Heat fixtures.
