Early Life and Move West

Behrendorff was born in New South Wales but grew up in Canberra, playing representative cricket for the ACT at junior and senior levels. At 19 he moved to Western Australia for the 2009-10 season, and injuries to other quicks gave him an early state debut. He never looked back.

Back problems ended his red-ball career after the 2017-18 season — not before he produced one of the great Shield spells: 9 for 37 against Victoria at the WACA in 2017, with match figures of 14 for 89, the second-best by a WA bowler ever. He finished with 126 first-class wickets at 23.85 and 75 one-day wickets plus five One-Day Cup titles for WA.

Thirteen Years in Orange

Behrendorff debuted for the Perth Scorchers in BBL|02 (2012-13) and barely missed a beat for 13 years: 106 games, 140 wickets — the second-most in franchise history behind Andrew Tye — and four BBL titles (2013-14, 2014-15, 2021-22 and 2022-23).

His best BBL season came in BBL|14, when he topped the league with 17 wickets at 17.41 and an economy of 7.55. Left-armers who swing the new ball are gold in T20, and Behrendorff is one of the best at it. His Scorchers honours list is long: titles in 2013-14, 2014-15, 2021-22 and 2022-23, plus 140 wickets across 106 games.

The Move to Melbourne

After the Scorchers reshuffled their squad, they didn’t renew his contract — and the Renegades pounced, signing him through the BBL’s first Player Movement Window on a three-year deal ahead of BBL|15. He was the first player to switch clubs through the new window — a historic move for the league. Moving to Melbourne was also a family goal: his wife Juvelle and he had long wanted to live there, and he has spoken about settling in the city after cricket.

In February 2025 he retired from first-class and List A cricket after 16 years with Western Australia, calling it “the end of one chapter which has been a really exciting one.” Family was a big part of the call — he spoke about wanting to be home for his kids, “in particular, things like school pick-up and drop-off,” and to spend more time with his wife Juvelle. He remains a full-time T20 player — and eligible for Australia selection.

ODI Career

Behrendorff played 12 ODIs between 2019 and 2022, taking 16 wickets. His career-defining moment came at the 2019 World Cup, when he took a five-wicket haul against England at Lord’s to set up a famous Australian win — one of the great Australian World Cup spells.

T20I Career

He played 17 T20Is for Australia, taking 18 wickets, with his last appearance against the West Indies in Perth in 2024. He was named Australia’s T20 Player of the Year for the 2023/24 summer — recognition of his white-ball excellence at the back end of his international career.

Franchise Career

Behrendorff has also played in the IPL with Mumbai Indians — including a 14-wicket season in 2023 — and in the SA20 with Pretoria Capitals. His full career record is on his Wikipedia profile.

Playing Style

Behrendorff is a tall left-armer who swings the new ball both ways and bowls with serious pace. He’s lethal in the powerplay — that combination of swing, bounce and accuracy is why he was the BBL’s best bowler in BBL|14. He’s also one of the smartest death bowlers in the league, rarely missing his yorker under pressure. If the new ball swings at Marvel Stadium, the Renegades’ big investment will pay for itself many times over this summer. That is exactly what big three-year deals are for.

Recent Form and What to Watch

BBL|15 was a season of adjustment in new colours – only four wickets by mid-January – and the veteran will want a much bigger impact in BBL|16.

The Renegades need him at his BBL|14 best. With the new ball in hand at Marvel Stadium, his swing could be the difference between a finals run and another mid-table finish. At 36, he is one of the oldest players in the league – but left-arm swing does not age, and his 17-wicket BBL|14 season showed he is still among the very best. He has played 106 BBL games, almost all of them in Scorchers orange, and that experience is exactly what the Renegades paid for.

The Renegades have brought in fresh talent like Jonny Bairstow and re-signed Ben Manenti, and Behrendorff’s new-ball nous will be vital to their plans. Watch the powerplay: if he’s swinging it early, Renegades fans are in for a treat.
