Early Life and Family

Cricket runs deep in the Wildermuth family. His grandfather Graham Bizzell played first-class cricket for Queensland, and his great-uncle Tom Veivers played Tests for Australia. Jack scored a century on his Futures League debut at the end of the 2013-14 season and earned a Queensland rookie contract.

By 2016-17 he was showing his full all-round game — a century and a five-wicket haul in the same Shield season. He’s a two-time Sheffield Shield winner with Queensland (2017-18 and 2019-20), and he has also tested himself in the PSL with the Quetta Gladiators.

BBL Career

Wildermuth made his BBL debut for the Heat on 21 December 2016. He then spent three seasons with the Melbourne Renegades (2017-18 to 2019-20) before returning home to Brisbane. He’s also played for the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL.

His career highlight came in December 2025 in BBL|15 — and what a night it was. Chasing a mammoth 258 against the Perth Scorchers at the Gabba, Wildermuth smashed an unbeaten 110 off 54 balls with 5 fours and 9 sixes. Matt Renshaw made 102 off 51 at the other end, and their 212-run stand was the first time two batters scored hundreds in the same T20 run chase. The Heat got home with a ball to spare — the highest successful run chase in BBL history, and the third-highest in all of T20 cricket.

The night had everything. The Scorchers had piled up 257 for 6 — the second-highest total in BBL history — with Finn Allen smashing 79 off 38 and Cooper Connolly 77 off 37. When Jhye Richardson dismissed Colin Munro with the first ball of the chase, the Gabba went quiet. Then came the sliding-doors moment: Richardson had Matt Renshaw caught, only for replays to show a front-foot no-ball. Renshaw, reprieved, went on to 102 off 51 with nine sixes before being run out.

Wildermuth never stopped. He reached his first T20 hundred off 46 balls and was there at the end, with nine needed off the final over from Aaron Hardie. Two balls left, two needed — he slashed the penultimate delivery to backward point and a misfield let him scamper back for the second. Unbeaten on 110, history made: the first time two players scored centuries in the second innings of a T20, 36 sixes in the match (a BBL record), and 515 runs in total (another BBL record).

For Renshaw it was a maiden T20 century too — 102 off 51 before being run out late, cramping, going for a tight second run. Two Queenslanders, two hundreds, one unforgettable night at the Gabba.

Ahead of BBL|16, the Heat re-signed Wildermuth to fill the final spot on their 18-player roster — and he’ll share the squad with new signings like Tom Curran.

T20I Career

Wildermuth played 2 T20Is for Australia on the 2018 Zimbabwe tri-series tour, debuting against Zimbabwe on 6 July 2018 (cap 92). He took 1 for 16 on debut but didn’t get another chance at international level — a reminder of how crowded Australia’s all-rounder stocks have always been.

Playing Style

Wildermuth is a genuine all-rounder. He bowls lively medium-fast, hits the deck hard, and swings the new ball. With the bat, he’s a clean striker who can clear the ropes — as that 110 not out showed. He’s the kind of cricketer every T20 squad wants: does a bit of everything, and does it with a smile.

Recent Form and What to Watch

The 110 not out against the Scorchers was the defining innings of BBL|15 and a reminder that Wildermuth’s ceiling with the bat is enormous. With the Heat’s 18-man squad now complete, his flexibility — a middle-order hitter who bowls four overs of lively medium-fast — makes him one of the most useful squad members in the league. For BBL|16, the question is whether he can string that kind of form together across a full season. If he does, the Heat have a genuine match-winner on their hands. In his early thirties, Wildermuth brings experience as well as hitting – exactly what young squads need in tight finishes.
